SPRING 2020 RESIDENTS

Cory Feder

Gosha Elaev

Lis Xu

Since a lot of us are cooped up for the coming month(s), Perfectly Acceptable decided it's time to start a residency. We named it after our most enduring intern, Pumpkin, a very loving Shar-Pei / Chow Chow / Golden Retriever / Doberman mix.

For the months of April and May we will work with three artists to produce three individual (one per artist) 16-32 page, 5x7", Risograph books that will be published by Perfectly Acceptable in July. The content of these books is (almost) totally up to the discretion of the artists. Like any of our publications, we will work closely with the artists to make a book that synthesizes form and content.

The artists will each receive 100 books, $500, or some combination thereof after the publication of the book.

In addition, we are offering an $800 scholarship for artists who want to apply, but are currently undergoing financial hardship due to COVID-19 — or just financial hardship in general. Anyone who thinks this would be helpful to them may apply for it; we will not be doing any sort of investigation — totally honor system. We have enough set aside to award all three artists selected the scholarship if need be. Any leftover funds will be donated to COVID-19 relief efforts.

We are looking for (ideally):

  • Artists who have worked in printmaking or Risography before.

  • Artists who are familiar with the Perfectly Acceptable catalog. Your project can be anything you'd like, but we primarily publish books of: experimental comics and narrative illustration with a cohesive theme.

  • Original work — please do not recycle or revamp something you've previously produced. If you've already drawn most of a project, it's probably too far along for this residency. If you've just done a few sketches, it's a better fit.

The application asks for a biography of yourself and your work, and a description of your project. The bio may be informal — we don't need a formal resume or C.V. Likewise, your project can be just a sketch; we understand that things might change as you begin working. But please, no work directly addressing COVID-19 unless you have an extra-special reason.

Artists may apply in pairs with the understanding that they would be splitting the edition / payment / scholarship (if applicable). Include both names and bios in your application if possible.

You must be 18 years or older. Artists from around the world are welcome to apply.

The residency is remote — no travel involved. We will correspond by email.

If you have any questions, please email us at info@perfectly-acceptable.com.
